Graduate Medical Education
Freestanding children’s hospitals are not eligible to receive federal graduate medical education dollars, because funding is provided through the Medicare Program. In the past, MCH has only been eligible to receive funding though the Federal Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) Program.
Currently, MCH holds 118 approved Graduate Medical Education positions by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). While MCH is eligible to receive funding for 96 accredited CHGME positions, due to continued federal budget cuts, only 60 of the 96 positions are fully funded. MCH currently funds 58 graduate medical education at a cost of $4.6 million.
We believe the preservation of future pediatric training through GME is key to the continued strengthening of the pediatric care workforce throughout the nation. For the sickest children, pediatric subspecialists are indispensable, and today we are facing a national shortage of these essential providers.
We appreciate Governor Scott’s continued support of GME and ask legislators to continue enhancing funding for the statewide program.
